SUMMARY:Music at SBS: Margaret Bennett & Skip Gorman
DESCRIPTION:Margaret Bennett\, Gaelic singer from Skye\, is widely regarded as Scotland’s foremost folklorist. She sings\, tells stories and lectures on both sides of the Atlantic: “It is rare to witness such a charismatic and fascinating raconteur.” \nSkip Gorman brings to life the beautifully poignant music performed around campfires by cowboys and settlers in the 19th century. He brings his personal experience as a cowboy in Wyoming\, along with an exquisite touch as a singer\, guitarist\, and fiddler.

SUMMARY:The Skye and Lochalsh Orchestra Open Day
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to our Open Day!\nSt Columba’s Church\, Portree\nSaturday 25 October 2025\n10.30am – 3pm\nIf you would like to attend\, please email us at\nenquiries@slo-skye.org.uk\nor phone Jo Headley on 07532328387.\nOn the programme\nBeethoven Allegretto from 7th Symphony\nJohn WIlliams Theme from Jurassic Park \nWelcome\nWe’re looking forward to coming to Portree on the 25th of October\, and hope that you’ll be able to join us. \nThe open day is for anyone who can read music\, who wants to see what it’s like to play with a small friendly orchestra and a very patient conductor. You might be learning an instrument\, or have learnt to play in the past. Everyone is welcome! This is a great opportunity to make music\, playing these 2 great pieces by Beethoven and John Williams. \nThe Timetable\nWe will start the day at 10.30am\, setting up stands and music\, and having a cup of tea or coffee. The music starts at 11 am\, with a break at 12.30pm for the lunch which members of the orchestra will provide. At about 2.30pm we will have a short break\, then play through what we have learnt\, as if we were giving a concert. Your friends and family are very welcome to come along and listen. \nThe Music\nWe will be printing out the music\, but can also email your part for the Beethoven before the day\, if you want to try it out beforehand. If you have concerns that the music is too difficult\, do let us know\, as we can probably simplify it. (Some of us do that anyway!) If you have a music stand\, please bring it along\, but don’t worry if you haven’t. \nThe Venue\nSt Columba’s Church has about 8 – 10 parking spaces\, so these will be reserved for those with heavy instruments or mobility issues. Please let us know if you need one of these spaces. There is free parking further down the road at the Community Hall. If you’re able to car share\, that would be great! \nRefreshments\nAs we are providing lunch\, please let us know if you have any allergies or dietary requirements. The earlier we know\, the easier it will be for us to cater for you. \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

SUMMARY:Figurative Work By Grace Crisp
DESCRIPTION:  \nA fabulous range of images is on display in Grace Crisp’s inaugural solo exhibition\, featuring some very striking larger works – all original. “Hands  are common in my work. Often exaggerated in size and the tendons seeming to  jump out. There is so much feeling held in our hands\, how we hold them in  conversation\, at rest and even in sleep. With my portraits\, I like for the  hands to be the centre of the piece. The faces I draw\, or paint can be quite  stoic and unimpressed\, yet the hands tell a different story.” \nGrace Crisp is a young figurative artist from Northumberland. She graduated from Camberwell School of Art in 2022 during the Covid pandemic and we are excited to be showing Grace’s work in the Skye Bridge Studios Gallery.  Do come along and meet Grace at our special viewing/opening  from 5-6:30pm on Thursday October 23rd. \nPLEASE NOTE \nOpening Times: Tues – Thurs 2-4pm or by arrangement

SUMMARY:Guir! Gaelic Arts Showcase
DESCRIPTION:A showcase event of new works in Gaelic: \nIn recent years Glasgow Life has played an important role in creating and developing work for diverse artists interested in experimental approaches to Gaelic artforms. The incubator programme GUIR!\, which was started in 2018\, incorporates a collaborative and learning model to develop new Gaelic work across all disciplines. Every year we invite artists to submit proposals to participate in the scheme. This year’s participating artists are Babs NicGriogair\, Josie Duncan\, Cashlin NicCoinnich and Màiri Nicillemhaoil \nJosie Duncan\nA singer who aims to bring diversity into Gaelic songwriting. The Gaelic language has a rich tradition of storytelling and expression\, and as a queer artist\, Josie aims to contribute to this tradition by creating new Gaelic songs that reflect her experiences and journey as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. They celebrate diversity\, inclusion\, and the unique intersection of queer identity and Gaelic culture. After gigs\, Josie has been approached with many stories showing huge strength and resilience\, and she wants to explore the ‘double life’ that she has heard people speak about\, when they feel that being a Gael and being a queer person are conflicting identities. \nMàiri Macillemhaoil – A Togail Fianais (Bearing Witness)\nSinger and writer bearing witness for Gaels in the modern age. Gaelic song has been used as a form of protest for centuries\, raising awareness of injustice and subjugation of the Gaels. How is the cultural knowledge in these songs relevant to the climate emergency? Mairi will present new songs exploring other minority languages\, melodies and a wealth of old and new poetry\, to continue the tradition of bearing witness and evidencing the current context for Gaels. \nCaitlin MacKenzie (Cashlin Ross NicCoinnich)\nA visual artist developing audio-visual work with archive footage\, field recordings and live music\nCaitlin is developing an experimental audio-visual live set using personal and archival footage\, field recordings\, puirt-a-beul (mouth music) and live music; she will draw inspiration from the melodies of bird song on the whistle and flute\, and in her singing. Exploring the relationship between folklore and ecology\, and inspired by archival recordings of her great-grandfather on the subject of ‘health wells’\, Caitlin is investigating the health spring connected to Loch Shianta and its local environment on the Isle of Skye\, paying particular attention to the traditional medicinal usages of local plants. She is also exploring how Gaels in Glasgow\,past and present\, have responded\, adapted to and influenced the city. \nBabs Nic Griogair – Fòn Dhachaigh! (Phone home!)\n(supported by Susannah Stark)\nWriter/performer inspired by phone calls home to explore connection and disconnection\, and maintaining their links with Gaelic. Using the recorded phone conversations they have with their mother each Sunday\, Babs Nic Griogair has weaved the themes of maintaining connections with Gaelic\, and ageing parents\, into an interactive soundscape\, installation and suite of poems. The work highlights themes of connection and disconnection; urban diaspora and rural roots; mothers and daughters\, fragility\, resilience\, mortality and vitality. As a non-binary gay artist\, they find certain topics may be taboo in some Gaelic spaces. The phone call home is not two-way\, and can be like listening to a soliloquy; listening intently but feeling unheard. How truthful are we in expressing our innermost feelings to a parent? Babs is looking at developing a phone box installation which can act as a confessional space\, or a place for the words we wished we’d said. \nDoors:\n19:00\nShow:\n19:30-19:50: Artist 1\n19:50-20:05: Break\n20:05-20:25: Artist 2\n2025-20-45: Break\n20:45-21:05: Artist 3\n21:05-21:20: Break\n21:20-21:40: Artist 4 \nTimes may be subject to change slightly. A bar will be available on the night.\nThis is a seated event and seats are unreserved. \nMore about GUIR!\nGUIR! is an opportunity to research and develop Gaelic Art practices and forms in the early stages of project development. Based on the equivalent of a 3-week full time residency or a 6-week part-time period\, with a Gaelic Cultural immersion learning programme\, it is an exciting opportunity to develop new\, challenging and embryonic ideas to the next stage of development. \nGUIR! is delivered by Glasgow Life and part of the Gaelic Arts Strategy for Glasgow City Council’s Gaelic Language Plan. GUIR works in partnership with The National Theatre of Scotland\, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig\, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Tramway. GUIR! is funded with support from Bòrd na Gaidhlig.
